Aeropress®
From: stumptowncoffee, with my added notes and links.
Instructions for using the Aerobie Aeropress® - a simple way to get espresso type coffee when travelling or at at work. Available from HasBean.
Similer in principle to a cafetiere, but with the addition of pressure to extract more from your coffee.
INVERTED METHOD
This is the method I prefer. See Jonathan Prestidge's Repack Espresso's video guide here
A handy one sheet sumary can also be found at HasBean
For alternative methods, see here
STEP ONE
Boil the water to 80-85C.
Measure and grind 17 grams (1 rounded Aeropress® scoop or just under 3 Tablespoons) of fresh coffee – the ground coffee should be about as fine as table salt.
Experiment with weights of coffee, as it depends on preference, and the bean/grind.
STEP TWO
Place the plunger upside down inside the brewing tube with the black rubber part touching the bottom of the number 4 circle and the top of the plunger on the table.
STEP THREE
If using a paper filter, rinse the filter with hot water. This makes plunging easier and allegedly removes the "paper" taste.
Preheat the inverted brewer by rinsing with boiled water.
Some people prefer to use a metal filter such as Able filter , available from HasBean. The metal coffee filter is a reusable filter that allows more oils and a fuller bodied cup of coffee. Eliminates the need for paper filters, which is especially convenient when travelling. Cleaning is easier with a paper filter though, as the used grounds tend to eject more easily as a single "puck".
STEP FOUR
Add your coffee into the inverted Aeropress®. Set your timer for 1 minute, and start it as you pour hot water about (30 seconds off the boil or about 205F) into your brewer, saturating the grounds. Pour to the top of the 3 level and stir thoroughly.
STEP FIVE
Pour enough water to bring the level to above the level 2 circle. Place the rinsed filter and black cap on top of brewer and screw it tightly. When your timer goes off, tip the brewer to a 45 degree angle and spin it for 10 seconds.
Flip the brewer on top of your mug and plunge with gentle and steady pressure, stopping as soon as you hear a hissing sound.
STEP SIX
Carefully flip the brewer upright and dilute the brew in your cup to taste with hot water - start with 50/50 ratio and adjust for preference.
